Main Subject Areas
At Sankofa Montessori, our Kindergarten curriculum reflects The Sankofa Bridge, our unique approach that combines the academic structure of traditional public education with the hands-on, child-centered philosophy of Montessori education.
Through direct instruction, collaborative teaching, small-group learning, and purposeful Montessori work cycles, our passengers develop strong academic foundations while building independence, confidence, and a love for learning.
English Language Arts (ELA)
Our Kindergarten passengers develop foundational literacy skills through Wonders, our standards-aligned English Language Arts curriculum. Instruction focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, letter recognition, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and early writing skills. Through direct instruction, guided reading, small-group lessons, and hands-on literacy activities, passengers build the skills needed to become confident readers and writers.
Mathematics
Using Open Up Resources, passengers develop number sense, counting, number recognition, addition, subtraction, measurement, and problem-solving skills. Teachers combine explicit instruction with Montessori manipulatives, visual models, and hands-on activities to help passengers develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and apply their learning to real-world situations.
Science
Through STEMscopes, passengers explore the world around them using inquiry-based instruction, hands-on investigations, and scientific discovery. Passengers develop observation, questioning, and critical-thinking skills while exploring life science, physical science, and Earth and space science concepts.
Montessori Work Cycle & Practical Life
Our Montessori-inspired work cycle provides passengers with opportunities to explore, make purposeful choices, and take ownership of their learning. Through hands-on materials, independent work, and practical life experiences, passengers develop concentration, independence, responsibility, fine motor skills, and problem-solving abilities. These experiences complement structured academic instruction and encourage passengers to become confident, self-directed learners.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Through Second Step, Montessori Grace and Courtesy lessons, and daily classroom experiences, passengers develop emotional awareness, self-regulation, positive relationships, and conflict-resolution skills. Our five Core Values—Love, Joy, Ownership, Purpose, and Reflection—are intentionally embedded throughout the school day to support character development and a positive school community.
Physical Education & Health
Our Physical Education and Health program supports the development of healthy habits, physical coordination, teamwork, and overall wellness. Passengers participate in structured movement activities, cooperative games, and age-appropriate health instruction that promotes physical fitness, sportsmanship, and positive social interactions.
Targeted Intervention & Enrichment
Recognizing that every passenger learns differently, our instructional team uses academic assessments and classroom performance data to provide targeted support and enrichment. Through small-group instruction, differentiated lessons, and evidence-based reading and mathematics interventions, passengers receive additional opportunities to strengthen foundational skills, close learning gaps, and extend their learning.
